Does gameplay have politics?
Jonas Heide Smith wrote Does gameplay have politics? This essay examines the possible corrolation between games with an emphasis on narrative and games with an emphasis on rule based environments with political ideologies associated with varying degrees of structure and agency. The conclusion is that more serious research is needed, but Jonas seems sceptical that we can say more agency for the game player = more libertarian message. It seems clear to me that the relationship between a game's form and it's political content is not less complex than in artistic and scientific equivilents.

ALL OUT JUNE 5
Polls seem to show that people think this war was a mistake. With more people against the occupation now than there were when there was the biggest demonstration in history on the weekend on Feb 15 last year, we have an opportunity to build a large demonstration against the ongoing occupation of Iraq. Washington, LA, and San Francisco will all be host to demonstrations. Come on out and show Bush and Kerry what we think of their war. Show the people of Iraq that we are internationalists! And demand that our taxes go to schools, healthcare, housing and jobs - not for military contracts! Read this moving letter about the support that protestors - including military families - got from soldiers as they protested in San Diego.

Water Cooler Games
After following refferals from the logs to some of my sites I stumbled across this conversation about antiwargame. It was fattering to read such a serious consideration of the meaning of the piece. I have since found that there are a number of sites dedicated to making political and socially conscious games (though not always left wing, or particularly radical). One more progressive site is called water cooler games which a lot of interesting links to other game sites and a blog of interesting links. The creators of the site are both involved in making games such as: these.

End the Occupation - Bring the Troops Home NOW!
I will be giving a talk on Wednesday May 12 at 7pm at the International Socialist Organization in San Francisco:
110 Capp Street, 2nd Floor (between 16th and 17th Streets). It will not be about They Rule - but it is definitely related! It will be about why the war in Iraq was wrong, why it happened and how we can continue to build the movement that demands that it stops.

Newsmap
Newsmap "is an application that visually reflects the constantly changing landscape of the Google News news aggregator. A treemap visualization algorithm helps display the enormous amount of information gathered by the aggregator. Treemaps are traditionally space-constrained visualizations of information. Newsmap's objective takes that goal a step further and provides a tool to divide information into quickly recognizable bands which, when presented together, reveal underlying patterns in news reporting across cultures and within news segments in constant change around the globe.
Newsmap does not pretend to replace the googlenews aggregator. It's objective is to simply demonstrate visually the relationships between data and the unseen patterns in news media. It is not thought to display an unbiased view of the news, on the contrary it is thought to ironically accentuate the bias of it." Newsmap is a demonstration of the treemap technology similar to that used in
Smart Money's Market Map. It was made by Marcos Weskamp and Dan Albritton. All of this technology is no doubt very good for business as hivegroup are keen to show you. Thanks to newsmap for making a more critical application.

Political Friendster
They say the personal is political, and it is especially true for the people listed on this site. Political Friendster (developed by Doug McCune), "allows users to create connections between political figures. This site depends on user involvement for its success! Feel free to add any people you want to the database and create connections between people and corporations. The only thing we ask is that you limit your contributions to serious entries. Political Friendster only works if everyone adds legitimate people and connections." Go there now and add some data to enhance the value of the site. It has a very simple and seemingly effective voting mechanism for keeping the data real.
