 Pre Post Industrialism
Adam Turl's article Is the U.S. becoming post-industrial? answers the question neagtively - though yearns for a world which can take advantage of new technology. I loved this article and want everyone to read it.

 Actionscript 2.0 made better
If I was starting a big Actionscript 2.0 project - I would use the CASA framework. I work with some of the people who built it - and have used aspects of it. It is really great because it helps you write code that cleans up after itself really well. There is lots of great documentation and it is open source - yay.

 Cellphone surveillance
A CNet article that describes the FBI enabling software on cellphones to use the mics as bugs. It would be good if we could make a hack that just played elevator music - or better still the internationale loudy into the mic of a cellphone whenever it wasn't in use.

 How They Rule Us
How They Rule Us is a short blog entry by John Molyneux - a British Socialist. Here is an excerpt:
Capitalism, as we have seen, is a class divided society based on exploitation. Under capitalism a tiny highly privileged minority rules over the large majority and lives off their labour. How do they get away with it ?

The answer, as the Italian Marxist, Antonio Gramsci pointed out, is by a combination of force and consent. In reality force and consent are very closely intertwined and mutually reinforce each other, but for the moment I shall discuss them separately.

 Invisible 5
Listen to the Invisible 5 Environmental Justice Audio Tour as you travel between San Francisco and Los Angeles or vice versa. Hear the stories of people who live near the I5 and deal with environmental racism - battling toxic waste dumps, incinerators and smog. You can download the mp3s and listen on your mp3 player - or save it for the trip.

 Surplus Reality
Jacob Moreno had a concept called "surplus reality", which was a space where people could live out alternative realities on stage and try out different ways of behaving in a safe space and get feedback from others. I was listening to This American Life this weekend and they had a story (Mind Games) on an Improv Group in New York who perform "missions" of constructed reality. Sometimes constructing reality can cause pain. Liste to the story on This American Life and read the Improv group's missions.

Live News feeds on a map of the world
Jeroen Wijering made What's Up, a map of the world that gets overlaid with live news feeds. It doesn't take long before you have to click on something...
